High Absenteeism will impact NY economy

Jason Riley at the Wall Street Journal wrote about how high abseenteism will lead to lower productivity:

“Absenteeism leads to learning losses, which aren’t spread evenly across demographic groups. Children who were already behind pre-Covid have fallen further behind, and those same kids are the ones mostly likely to be regularly missing school.

These young people are future workers. Their productivity, and thus the nation’s, will depend on the skills they learn in school and bring with them into the labor force. People with fewer skills are less productive, and less productive countries are poorer.”

Read the NY Post article about how NYC DOE is asking for additional hundreds of millions to implement the class size law.

“School officials revealed Thursday that the Department of Education’s (DOE) gigantic $41.2 budget plan for next year that will take up around a third of the entire city’s budget still isn’t enough money.

“The question that policy makers should ask is how do we improve learning outcomes for New York City school children, rather than asking for more money.”
